Rest
articleRest

Rest is a player attribute affected by sleep. Players who lack rest begin to lose maximum stamina, hydration, sustenance (and increased dwindle rate), and carrying capacity. Players can rest using a bed or summoned shelter.
Resting cannot be performed during combat or a raid.
Mechanics
- Using a bed or summoned shelter at night will skip to morning and completely refill the rest meter.
- A full night's rest removes all status over time effects, such as Bleed, Poison, Shocked, Burning, and Soulscourge.
- Using a bed or summoned shelter during the day will result in napping, which recharges 1 point per second (taking at most 100s to fully recover from 0-100 rest). This can be cancelled at any time.
- While napping, if nighttime occurs, a full sleep to day will occur automatically.
- Rest points slowly dwindle over time:
- 100–26: Reduced by 1 point per 72 seconds, taking 5,400s total (1hr 30m).
- 25–0: Reduced by 1 point per 144 seconds, taking 3,600s total (1h 0m).
- Upon death, rest will be reduced by 15 points, but will not be set lower than 25/100.
- A full daylight cycle lasts 24 minutes; night is roughly 5 minutes of that.
Hydration and sustenance
- After a full night's rest, the player will receive a Fresh Start perk (buff) which lasts for 180s (3m), and stops the dwindling of all player attributes (hydration, sustenance, and rest), which can be seen in the bottom left, as a rising sun next to a bar gauge.
- After a full night's rest, hydration and sustenance are reduced in anticipation for breakfast, if players are not near their claimed bed and have slept in their summoned shelter.
- Hydration:
- 65-100: Hydration randomly reduced by up to 40
- 25-65: Hydration reduced randomly by up to 40, to a minimum of 25
- 0-25: Hydration maintained at current value.
- This means to best optimize resources for drinking, a player should rest as close to or below 25/100 hydration as possible.
- Sustenance:
- 55-100: Sustenance reduced by up to 30, randomly
- 25-55: Sustenance reduced randomly by up to 30, to the minimum of 25
- 0-25: Sustenance maintained at current value.
- This means to best optimize resources for eating, a player should rest as close to or below 25/100 sustenance as possible.
- Hydration:
- With the Cosiness perk where players are near their claimed bed, the hydration and sustenance meters are reduced as follows:
- Hydration: Reduced by 2-3, regardless of hydration levels
- Sustenance: Reduced by 2-3, regardless of sustenance levels
Thresholds
| Rest level | Effects |
|---|---|
| 100/100 | N/A |
| 75/100 | N/A |
| 50/100 Tired | Reduced maximum stamina to 80/100 |
| 25/100 Knackered | Reduced maximum stamina to 60/100 Reduced maximum carrying capacity to 300 (350 with leggings of lightness) Reduced maximum sustenance and hydration to 75/100 Sustenance and hydration dwindling will increase by a rate of 1s per point |
| 0/100 Exhausted | Reduced maximum stamina to 40/100 |
- Whilst the Journal Entry states that when exhausted, the player will, "...[find] spells more expensive to cast", there is no clear mechanism in which this is the case in the game. Magic staves still cost the same stamina, expend 1 rune per cast, and all spells from the player skill spellbook cost the same number of runes.
Player Announcements
Upon reaching certain thresholds of rest, a player announcement on screen will display:
50/100: You cannot stifle a yawn as your tiredness hits you
25/100: You're tired and your eyelids feel really heavy. You could use a nap.
5/100: You're absolutely knackered and your legs barely want to move. Time for a rest.
0/100: You’re exhausted. You can’t go on like this, get some rest.
Journal
The following text is transcribed from the Journal.
We all need to rest from time to time. Sometimes everything just gets too much, we get tired, stressed, and just generally beaten down by the world, and it’s no different on Ashenfall. Rest represents your overall state of resilience. Your ability to overcome to mental trials of the wild. It will deplete over time if you’re not resting, as well as every time you suffer lethal damage. Certain environmental effects will also take their toll. The lower your Rest, the less functional you’ll be. You’ll find it harder to lug everything around. It becomes more draining to swing an axe, or a sword. Even magic will become more difficult as you tired yourself out. There are four levels of Rest: Well-rested - this will leave you functioning at your bestTired, you’ll start to suffer penalties to your Stamina, as well as your Carrying Capacity.Knackered - everything is really starting to get to you. You’ll suffer penalties to Stamina, Carry Capacity and even find yourself thirstier and hungrier.Exhausted- you’ll suffer heavy penalties to Stamina and Carry Capacity, as well as finding spells more expensive to cast.Fortunately you can recover your Rest with a nice long rest in bed.
