Rune Essence

Rune essence can be gathered by mining rune essence stones surrounding the geysers around Ashenfall. Some spawn with rocks on the ground that you can easily gather from. The floating rocks require being hit (most easily with an arrow or an attack from a staff), and they will then fall to the ground to be mined. Alternatively, players can cast Rocksplosion whilst aiming at the floating rocks and can collect rune essence without affecting the pickaxe's durability.

Collecting rune essence in their inventory for the first time unlocks the rune altar.

A magical stone with the ability to absorb the ambient anima around it. On Ashenfall, the rocks hover in the air as if resting on some invisible structure, held aloft by invisible currents of magical energy. With the right equipment and skill, Rune Essence can be infused with certain magical resonances, taking on the elemental power of the air or the flame. This discovery is one of Guthix’s greatest triumphs and perhaps his most enduring miracle.
